General facts about Glass, Cans and Plastic Bottles
Glass
Glass is a combination of sand and other minerals that are melted together at very high temperatures.
The UK imports twice as much green glass as is manufactured, mainly in the form of wine bottles. In the past this has lead to a surplus of green cullet. The industry has worked hard to increase the amount of green glass recycled and currently all the green bottles we make in the UK contain at least 85 per cent recycled green glass.
Cans
If every aluminium drink can sold in the UK each year was recycled, there would be 14 million fewer dustbins buried in landfill sites.
Every steel can is 100% recyclable. It can be recycled over and over again into products like bicycles and of course new cans
Just one recycled aluminium can saves enough energy to run a television set for three hours!
Plastic Bottles
Plastic accounts for 11% of the waste stream which, if recycled, would result in a vast reduction in the amount of rubbish going to landfill, which is particularly important as plastic is believed to take around 500 years to decompose!
It takes just 25 two litre pop bottles to make one adult size fleece jacket
